it doesn't look like that when seen from close up in an auto-rotating Blackhawk.
*shudders*

probably a bit more motion blur involved...
I think that I'm hoping it was Rainier - since auto-rotating onto a sub just sounds like a small wet target ? (but maybe the water would be softer?)

yes, Rainier.
we were out from Lewis, looking for a dumbass hiker who got lost.
the pilot said we were RTB (the hiker had turned up) and decided to do some AR drills on the way back.
sickmaking.

It's been a pretty nice year - very little drizzle - but it's just now getting "good" :)

Had a shot a couple years ago that had a ferry, sub, tug, and barge/crane - regular traffic jam!

Beautiful photo - combine my favorite mountain with my favorite boat is a winner! The only thing better would be if you had Holly and Floofie in the sub tower.

I wonder if subs do nose-art. I've put Holly on an F-105, maybe she needs to be on a sub?

Subs put their art on the sail, or conning tower, at least back in WWII. The higher-ups in the chain of command (both German and American) tried to stop it but the subs skippers allowed it. The the sailors liked it, and no one would seriously challenge an expression of pride in their boat from front line submariners. A retro WWII era Holly on a sub? Instant fave!

I'll bet the first guy who put it on the sail thought - "If I put it on the BOW my wife will think I'm implying she has a big ass..." :)

Actually that damn sub goes by enough that it's just "Really cool" - now "Holy F-ing Sh!t!!! cool " :)
The light was so bad that I didn't even run over and shoot the "close-ups" - instead, I stepped out my front door and braced against a porch column and shot... (Lazy huh?) :)
